Your wedding day is, if not, the most important day of your life! So you should look and feel your best! Even if your wedding ambiance is going to be very relaxed and low key, we still suggest hiring a professional hair stylist. The main reason for this is the islands’ humidity, and wind present unique challenges most of our brides aren’t used to. The last thing you want on your wedding day is unnecessary hair surprises. Hiring a professional who knows how to style all types of hair for our climate expertly is highly recommended! It can mean the difference between your bridal look lasting 10 minutes or 10 hours.

The beautiful and talented Adiel Cline of Salon 253 Bride has worked with many of our past clients and was excited to share her top tips for achieving perfect Maui bridal hair. Here’s what she shared with us:

Consider Cut and/or Color

Your wedding day may be an opportune time to touch up your color, roots, or highlights. This advice Adiel gave is an ideal starting point when planning your hair for your wedding.

“If you get your hair regularly colored then coloring it a week before is best. Same with the cut if you’re getting a trim. This timeframe gives the hair time to settle, and you won’t have any obvious signs of re-growth. If you’re thinking of experimenting and having a change of style or color, I would recommend doing this well ahead of the wedding. This way you can make sure your new cut will accommodate the bridal hairdo you’d like!”

Plan Timing

We want everything about your wedding day to work together perfectly; timing is one of the most crucial elements! When asked, “How long should a bride plan for professional hair and make-up?” Adiel responded with.

“The time it takes to complete your hair on your wedding day depends on the style you’re having and of course how many additional members of the wedding party require our services. Generally speaking, bridal makeup application normally takes around 45-60 minutes. Bridal hair design takes about 60 minutes, 45 minutes for each additional adult and 30 minutes each for flower girls and so on. Add up the approximate allotted times and add another 30 minutes for set up and clean up. We always book a little extra time to ensure we are ahead of the game on your wedding day.”

Remember, when scheduling your ‘hair and makeup time,’  make sure you leave yourself enough time to get dressed and travel to your ceremony location. Do not forget to leave a little time for the unknown because someone always forgets something or gets lost; it just happens!

Choose a Bridal Hairstyle

The most important thing is to choose a style you will feel comfortable and beautiful with while being resilient to our climate and weather.

Here’s what Adiel had to say about choosing the perfect hairstyle.

“An updo typically lasts longer with the humidity and heat and will fare better if there is wind. Wearing your hair down is beautiful as well, and there are ways to help keep it more manageable with the wind. I like to call it the “down updo,” this is a hybrid style with most of the hair down with key pieces pulled back to keep the wind from blowing hair in your face while saying “I do.” If you’re still unsure, a trial is a great idea for testing different styles out. This way you can know for sure of the hairstyle you want before your big day arrives.”

Elegant Up-Do Options

Given that Maui can be very windy, an up-do is a beautiful yet practical option.(Especially, if you’re worried about fly-aways and hair in your face for your wedding photos.) An up-do can still look beachy and relaxed too! These are some gorgeous inspiration ideas with and without a veil.

You can’t go wrong with an elegant updo! Not only does it look great, but it also helps keep you cool on your wedding day!

Options for Short Hair

Many styles work beautifully on short hair! Here’s what Adiel suggests…

“You may want to grow it out a little to accommodate a particular style you are interested in, or temporary clip-in extensions can be an option too. I would recommend testing any style before your wedding day so you can see what is possible with your hair length. Short styles can be fun as well as elegant!”

Adding a flower crown is a great way to add some fun to a short hairstyle! Plus it’s perfect for a venue or beach wedding!

Hair Extension Possibilities

Along with spray tans and facials, hair extensions are one of those beauty procedures some women never consider trying until they’re preparing to walk down the aisle. It’s becoming increasingly popular for brides to include extentions in their wedding hairstyle. The key is choosing extensions that will look natural and complement your chosen bridal hairstyle.

Adiel offered this insight…

“We have seen some common mistakes with clip-in extensions. Don’t try clip-in hair extensions for the first time on your wedding day. Have your regular hairstylist or a friend put them in before your wedding, so you know what it’s like to have clip-in hair extensions. Trying the extensions beforehand will give you a better idea of how they will look and feel on your wedding day. Most extensions are processed remy hair (100% real human hair), which means they are VERY straight for packaging. The straighter they are, the harder it is to curl them. It’s advisable that you rinse, wash and or condition them before you use them (read packaging recommendations for care), allowing them to curl easier.”

Karma (the owner of Simple Maui Wedding) wore extensions at her Maui Vow Renewal to achieve her desired hairstyle! Using the extensions allowed her to have the past-the-shoulder style she wanted and gave her hair considerably more volume.

Set up a Trial

Even if you know what you’re after, it’s best to set up a trial for your bridal hair. Sometimes you may change your mind after the fact! It will take the stress out of your wedding day, knowing the final result ofyour wedding hairstyle and makeup! We know with destination weddings, trials can be hard to fit into your itinerary; we often get asked if a trial is necessary for bridal hair.

We couldn’t agree with Adiel more when she said…

“If you can make the time I highly recommend setting up a trial before your big day! If you don’t normally wear makeup or have never had your hair or makeup professionally done, a trial is a great way to see how you will feel before walking down the aisle. You want to feel comfortable and like yourself, so seeing the completed look prior gives you some time to adjust so you are all set on your big day!”

Wedding Day Prep

It is important to wear comfortable clothing when doing your wedding hair and makeup prep for a few reasons.

Adiel suggests…

“It’s best to wear something that can easily be removed when it’s time to put on your dress. You don’t want it to disturb your hair or makeup. I always recommend washing your hair the night before and letting it air dry. Although, if you have oily or fine hair wash it the morning of your wedding, make sure it is “completely dry” before your scheduled beauty appointments.”

How fun is this “wifey” robe our bride wore while getting ready for her big day?! This getting-ready clothing ensures her hair and make-up won’t get ruined from the clothing she must take on and off over her head.
